The UrbanButter Creative Group delivers professional brand marketing, placement and recognition by creating an unforgettable experience that truly engages and uplifts an audience beyond being simply spectators.
UrbanButter reinvents, innovates and ignites possibility.
It all started January 12th, 2007 on Granville St. in downtown Halifax—all it took was a few months of planning, three stories of scaffolding, 33 tones of snow brought in by dump trucks, and a company was born.
Entrepreneur, former Canadian Olympic development team snowboard coach, co-creator of a Cayman Island construction company, and owner of a successful Annapolis Valley development enterprise Dwayne Schofield was the madman responsible for dumping 33 tones of snow onto the streets of our fair city. Why would anybody do such a thing you might ask? A freestyle ski and snowboard competition right in downtown Halifax is the answer. The UrbanButter Showcase saw some 3000 spectators crowd the cobblestone streets in front of NASCAD to watch amateur and professional athletes from across Canada duke it out on a giant scaffolding structure that served as Granville St.’s very own temporary mountain. Thanks to national media coverage and an enormous crowd, the event was a huge success.
The overwhelming success of the event came as a bit of a surprise, but not one to be taken off guard, Dwayne quickly seized the entrepreneurial opportunity he had been waiting for using. On that day, with the UrbanButter Showcase as a launching pad, an events and marketing company named the UrbanButter Creative Group Inc. took flight—and what a flight it has been. Taking the Atlantic Canadian events industry by storm, within half a year of its creation UrbanButter Creative Group Inc. (UBCG) has pushed and shoved its way into the big leagues working with events such as the Big Blossom Concert in Kentville and the Halifax Waterfront Music Festival—not to mention major plans for the company flagship, the UrbanButter Showcase, that will see downtown Halifax host one of the largest urban freestyle skiing and snowboarding events in North America’s history, this year taking place November 28th-29th under the watchful eye of the Citadel Hill clock tower in Grande Parade.
Despite a string of early successes on the Atlantic Canadian events scene, as a company UBCG refused to be defined by an industry; with business skills well beyond the events arena, a proliferating network of corporate partners, and a growing following in the action sports demographic, UBCG could not swallow the prospect of resigning itself to a play-it-safe mentality—this is where Andrew comes in.
After welcoming Andrew Mcleod, an Acadia grad and head of an entrepreneurial empire including Canada’s largest student auction site, CampusBay Trading Inc., the UBCG team broke the definition of an events and marketing company by taking their company strategy to the next level. Combining an affinity for fashion with over two decades of design skills between them, the pair went to work on a 30-piece sailing inspired clothing and handbag line. Next, capitalizing on the company’s growing following in the Atlantic Canadian action sports demographic and taking advantage of an obvious gap left in the Atlantic Canadian surfing retail industry, the pair set their sights on swimwear and wetsuits—making waves in the industry so to speak.
In less than a year, under the leadership of two of Nova Scotia’s most innovative entrepreneurs, UBCG has become an institution in Atlantic Canadian events, built a formidable network of corporate partners, and is most recently settings its sights on building a presence in Nova Scotia’s developing industries. With its first birthday in sight and the company flagship event quickly approaching, UBCG’s prospects have never looked better; bringing together some of Nova Scotia’s brightest young entrepreneurs and taking advantage of a rapidly growing client base, UBCG steps into its second year with confidence—proving that young blood and new ideas can thrive in the Nova Scotian business arena.
